Toshiba: Matching Donor Drives and PCBs

Toshiba builds 2.5″ laptop drives (MK and MQ series), 3.5″ desktop drives (DT, P300, X300) and enterprise drives (MG, AL series). Many Toshiba 3.5″ models are based on former Hitachi designs.

What is on a Toshiba label

Toshiba label: model, HDD code and firmware explained
Example label (schematic).

ModelMQ01ABD100, DT01ACA300Family and capacity.
HDD code / P/NHDK…Build code. For MQ and newer drives the most important value besides the model.
Firmwaree.g. AX…Firmware revision.
Date / country2016-08, Philippines / ChinaProduction date and factory.

Donor drive

  • MQ series (2.5″): same model and the same HDD code; firmware and date as close as possible.
  • MK series (older 2.5″): same model and the same PCB/board family number.
  • DT01 / P300 (3.5″): these are Hitachi-based designs – also compare the build codes on label and board as with HGST.
  • MG / AL (enterprise): HDD code and firmware; for SAS drives see server replacement drives.

PCB

Hard drive PCB: board number, ROM chip, controller and TVS diodes
  • Compare the board number printed on the PCB (Toshiba boards often show a G00… or similar number) and the revision.
  • Toshiba boards contain drive-specific data in the ROM / controller. Transfer it from the original board.
