HGST / Hitachi / IBM: Matching Donor Drives and PCBs

HGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, before that IBM) drives such as Deskstar, Travelstar and Ultrastar are popular in servers and NAS systems. Since 2012 HGST belongs to Western Digital, but the HGST models keep their own numbering.

What is on an HGST / Hitachi label

HGST / Hitachi label: model, P/N and MLC explained
Example label (schematic) – the MLC code is the key value.

Donor drive

  • Same model and the same MLC code. If the MLC is identical, the heads are usually compatible.
  • Same P/N if possible, production month close to yours.
  • Same number of heads.

PCB

Hard drive PCB: board number, ROM chip, controller and TVS diodes
  • Compare the board number printed on the PCB (often starting with 0A or 220) and the MLC printed on the board sticker.
  • Many HGST/Hitachi boards store drive-specific data in a ROM chip. Transfer the ROM from the original board.

Ultrastar / server drives

Ultrastar SAS drives from storage systems (NetApp, EMC, Dell, HP) often have special firmware and 520- or 528-byte sectors. Read our page about replacement drives for RAID and servers.
